the cells are solid concrete rooms in rows

with iron bars facing the middle

and the guard stands at the beginning of the pathway

closest to me and

LYDIA

the guard is eating a sandwich

that smells up the prison

LYDIA

shakes her sleeve and a bottle

it looks like perfume

slides out

she catches me looking

she points to the bottle

then to the guard

then mimics sleeping

it's nap gas

she takes a deep breath

and plugs her nose

i do the same

and she sprays it

it takes a moment

and we both pause

but the guard takes a deep breath

savoring the smell

of his terrible sandwich

and then

his eyes begin

to flutter

closed
