 Finally, towards the end of November I'm starting Lela's story.


11.28

I flop onto the couch and sigh. My apartment is boiling hot, because Mme. Penny Larson, the Caper capitolist who somehow owns a huge residential building in the middle of the Town, refuses to let tenants control the heat and air conditioning. I groan. AIBC was hard today. We're in the final stretches before the Sun and Moon Dance Competition next Wednesday, and practice is crazy. I heave myself off the sofa and go to my room to feed Willis. The door bangs open and I jump.

"LELA! WHAT DID YOU DO!?"

I come into the kitchen. Jax has a key to my apartment, but it's not in her hand. Matter of fact, her keys are in my room. She forgot them when we went to get breakfast this morning.

"How'd you get in?"

"You left the door open!"

"Oh. What's the problem?"

"Are you ready for your audition?!"

"What audition?"

"..."

"What audition, Jax? What are you talking about? Why are you freaking out?"

"The audition. For the Fallen Star Competition Team?"

"That's tomorrow, Jax. Calm down."

"No, it's today!"

"Today's the 27th. It's tomorrow."

"Lela, today is the 28th! We've got to go!"

"Surely you didn't come here to tell me about the audition?"

"..."

"Jax... What happened?"

"You infested the Goldstein Performance hall with spider eggs."

"..."

"Lee Lee, why would you do that?"

"..."

"Oh. OH. OH! THE SUN AND MOON COMPETITION IS IN THE GOLDSTEIN PERFORMANCE HALL!"

"..."

"Lela... Since when are you ever nervous about a comp? You'll do great!"

"I have two solos, Beth forced me to do a duet with Irene, I'm in the group dance, and I have another duet with Ainsley."

"Lela! Okay, first off? You do great with solos. Secondly, don't act like Irene is incompetent. Sure, she's not great with presentation, but she can dance. Like, duh. Thirdly, the group dance is a requirement-"

"Says Beth."

"And Beth is the boss, Lela. And I thought you wanted to do your duet with Ainsley! You talk about it all the time! You guys are both great dancers, all of you are. So stop fussing about the competiton, put some proper clothes on, and let's get to this audition!"

"...Jax Violet..."

"Come on, Lee Lee. Let's go."

 I remember mentioning that Lela's greatest fear is CHALK . Why? That's exactly what I'm about to explain: Lela is normally pretty tough. It takes a lot to rattle her.
